Our Impact
They remain vital to our existence today, generating over half the oxygen we breathe, regulating climate and weather patterns, and providing habitats for a stunning array of marine life. The Paul Angell Foundation’s Marine Conservation Program conserves our oceans by supporting organizations working to increase protection, shape policy, build legal and institutional capacity, and foster an enduring conservation community.

Strong fisheries governance sustains marine life by protecting its ability to thrive, reproduce, and remain diverse. We partner with organizations focused on building enduring global policy solutions for managing fisheries sustainably and eliminating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
Coral reef ecosystems are life-sustaining for corals, fish, and countless other species. We support conservation networks working to improve policy, strengthen expertise and knowledge, and embed coral priorities in national, regional, and global conservation efforts. We also partner with organizations advancing direct conservation activities in specific geographies or that address specific threats to coral survival.
Building capacity strengthens local organizations’ ability to conserve our oceans today and into the future. We work to equip conservation organizations with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to protect marine life and ecosystems in their communities while advancing meaningful change across the broader marine conservation movement.
Every enduring conservation success relies on a strong and enforceable set of laws and the long-term legal capacity to support them. We partner with nonprofit organizations working to increase global legal capacity for marine conservation.
We partner with organizations that aim to advance and defend evidence-based ocean conservation policy in the U.S., with the goal of sustaining the health and resilience of U.S. ocean ecosystems.
Marine Protected Areas are important conservation measures that protect habitats and support biodiversity. We partner with organizations advancing stronger management, sustainable financial planning, and biodiversity.
Sharks and rays are vital parts of ocean life, helping keep marine ecosystems balanced. We support work protecting sharks and rays through the Shark Conservation Fund and funding for high-impact species conservation, management, and policy efforts.
Keeping waters and marine life free from plastic enables ecosystems to function so life within them can flourish. We participate in the Plastic Solutions Fund and invest in efforts to reach an international agreement on reducing plastic production to mitigate its environmental impact.
The ocean regulates the climate by absorbing carbon and maintaining the balance that marine ecosystems depend on. Our grantmaking builds support for international climate action and decarbonizing maritime shipping. We participate in the Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance and support work in line with its priorities.
Our Marine Conservation program supports organizations in the U.S. and around the world with either 501(c)(3) status or international equivalence. We support groups working at the intersection of science and policy to advance evidence-based efforts that make a real, measurable difference in protecting marine life across the priorities above.
We are currently accepting applications by invitation only.
We rarely fund academic research, baseline data collection or monitoring, technology development, impact investments or commercial endeavors, clean-up programs, community outreach, or education.
We run three grantmaking cycles each year, aligned with our April, August, and November board meetings. Grantmaking is currently closed. Please check back for updates on upcoming opportunities.
